Wedding Cake Ideas for 2025, How to Make Your Cake Uniquely, Wonderfully Yours

From Star Wars toppers to a cake for every table, bespoke wedding cake designer Joy shares her favourite creative wedding cake ideas for couples in Jeffreys Bay, Port Elizabeth, and the Garden Route.

One of my absolute favourite things about making wedding cakes is that no two are ever the same.

Couples are different. Personalities are different. Love stories are different. And the cakes that come out of my Jeffreys Bay kitchen reflect every single one of those differences in the most beautiful way. Over the years, I've made everything from the classically elegant to the wonderfully unexpected, and I genuinely love it all.

So whether you're in the early stages of planning your wedding in Port Elizabeth or you've already booked your venue on the Garden Route and you're now turning your mind to the cake, here are some of the directions I've been most excited by lately.

The Classic, Timeless for a Reason

Some couples come to me knowing exactly what they want: a three or four-tier white cake, clean and elegant, dressed with a handful of carefully chosen flowers. No fuss. Nothing unnecessary. Just a cake that is beautiful in the way a great piece of tailoring is beautiful, through quality, proportion, and restraint.

I love making these cakes. There is real skill in simplicity, and a truly well-executed classic cake is a joy to behold. If this is your vision, we will make it exceptional.

The Personalised, Where the Story Gets Told

Then there are the couples who want the cake to say something specific about them, and this is where things get really fun.

I've made Star Wars cake toppers for two devoted fans. I've sculpted tiny fondant figurines of the bride, the groom, and their beloved dogs. I've recreated meaningful landscapes in sugar. I've incorporated hobby details, meaningful symbols, colours that told the story of a relationship.

If there's something that defines you as a couple, something that makes your love story yours, I want to find a way to put it on the cake.

The Trend, A Cake for Every Table

One of the most exciting commissions I've had recently was for Jessa and Benny, a couple who came to me wanting something they'd seen trending in the wedding world: a cake for every table.

Instead of one central wedding cake, I made eight individual cakes, one for each guest table. Each table had their own cake to cut. Each table had their own flavour, some got chocolate, some vanilla, some carrot, and the couples kept it a surprise. What happened next was one of my favourite things I've ever witnessed at a wedding: guests started getting up and wandering to other tables to taste what everyone else had. The cake became an icebreaker. It became a conversation. It became a reason for strangers to introduce themselves.

And at the main table, the bride and groom had their own slightly larger cake, topped with a Polaroid photograph of themselves. It was joyful and creative and completely, memorably them.

The Palette-Knife Floral, A Signature Style

If you've spent any time on the Weddings of Joy Instagram, you'll have seen my palette-knife florals, bold, textured, painterly blooms applied directly to the buttercream with a palette knife. It's a style I'm deeply passionate about, and it suits everything from the romantic to the dramatic. No two palette-knife cakes look alike, because each one is essentially painted by hand.

The Bottom Line

Whether you want something quietly classic, wildly creative, beautifully on-trend, or something entirely of your own invention, I can make it. More than that, I love making it.

Your wedding cake should feel like it could only ever have been made for you. That's what we're always working towards.
